The Importance of Goal Setting

Andrew Cocks asked:

The whole point of setting a goal is to help you bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. If you set goals and work toward them diligently, you can have all the things you want. People who set and achieve their goals are people who’ve decided what they want, committed themselves to going after it, and haven’t let anything stand in their way, short of violating the rights of others.

A proper goal gives you all the incentive you need to grow in your awareness of being a perfect expression of an Infinite power, designed for excellence and abundance. As you become more welcoming and aware of your relationship with God, and of all the potential that’s been built into you, you’ll function more effectively in harmony with the laws of the universe. Living in synch with all of this will yield results you’ve never dreamed possible.

They say that awareness is curative. It gives deep meaning to life because it spells the end of your robotic existence, no more walking in the deep ruts formed by your harmful programming and counterproductive thought life. These old ways of thinking aren’t ways you’ve chosen, they were planted in your heart when you were young by your parents, teachers, and religious leaders. While some of these programs serve you well, many of them are harmful and ready to be replaced. The old way of “living” has kept you from a truly abundant life.

But, in order to truly change, your old habits have to be replaced with new, healthy practices. Having a solid goal in place serves as a constant help as you do this. In fact, without a specific goal, you’re unlikely to ever make a significant change in your life. While you’re on your way toward achieving your goals, you learn to choose which thoughts you’ll allow into your mind. You’ll see the connection between these thoughts, the feelings and attitudes they produce, and ultimately the results they yield. It’s not something someone else can do for you.

Ever notice how your life never really stays the same? You’re either improving it or damaging it, your actions aren’t neutral. As a spiritual being, your spirit constantly seeks expansion and greater expression. When this deep desire is thwarted, you experience a feeling of dissatisfaction. That feeling is unpleasant enough to serve as a good motivator. We **** feeling unfulfilled, and work diligently to escape such an unpleasant feeling. We’ll do pretty much anything to satisfy this need.

This need for fulfillment goes way beyond just things and money, although they are important. They give you comfort and opportunity. It goes beyond happy feelings or a sense of peace, although they’re important, too. Our drive for complete fulfillment includes these things, but goes so much further, it’s a deep desire for a big purpose, something that catapults you into creativity, into meaningful and effective service.

Great, you were created to pursue worthy goals. How do you set them? How do you go after them? What can you do to make sure you achieve these grand goals?

Half the battle with goal-setting is determining exactly what it is that you want. Sounds easy enough, you answer that question just fine at a restaurant, on your birthday, when you get your hair cut. But when it comes to the big “what do you want” question, minds go blank. We don’t know what’s okay to ask for. What’s too much? Am I overreaching? How am I going to feel if I ask for something that’s beyond possibility?

Wow, such bad programming we pick up! Ask any little kid what they want to be when they grow up and you’ll hear answers like: the President, an astronaut, a gazillionaire, a cat, a rock star. Nothing seems impossible; nothing seems like it’ll come back to haunt you if it doesn’t work out.

Deciding what you want is risky. Telling someone else can feel uncomfortable. You might feel like you’ve got to preface it with something like, “Please don’t tell anyone, Can you keep a secret, I know it sounds crazy, but” But you know what? People who set and achieve awesome goals are risk takers, they’ve learned to be. They know that they’ve got the privilege and duty to design their own lives, make their own decisions. They dare to dream, and dream big. The power is in going after what you want, not in going after what you need.

Think you don’t have what it takes to meet your goals? Then here’s some great news, you’ve already got everything that could ever be necessary to produce amazing results in your life. You’ve got access to all you need, whether you see it right now or not. So, don’t worry about that as you choose goals. Assume you have every resource you need, right at your fingertips, because you do.

Most Powerful Personal Development Tool?

April 26th, 2009

Success88 asked:

If you have tried all Personal Development Programs and still not improved or changed for the betterment in life and is about to give up completely, this article is for you. Personal Development is the most sought after industry on earth today as every one is trying some how or other to improve themselves using various Personal Development Tools.

But why is it so difficult to improve your self and what is the benefit of improving yourself?

As you are aware our subconscious minds are far more powerful and has immense potential than anyone could ever imagine. As per scientists we humans use only 10% of our full potential. The other 90% is dormant in our subconscious minds and awaiting a chance to be awakened one day. Actually humans are 90% a sleep and only 10% awake. Just imagine what you would be able accomplish if you were to awaken the 90% of subconscious mind that is fast a sleep and is a sleeping giant. Our conscious mind is only the tip of the ice berg where as the actual ice berg is our subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind is like an infant, it does not know wrong from right or good from bad. It just follow your orders at all times without judging or questioning your intention behind the order. It has no knowledge to know the truth from imagination. That is why you get goose bumps when you watch  horror movie. The subconscious thinks that the film is happening for real. This is the very reason why visualizations work very well in personal development.

The subconscious mind is most vulnerable between the ages of 2-7 years during childhood. This is where we pick up all the Limiting Beliefs from our parents and family circles. Most of the time our parents and family members are not aware about how our subconscious mind works and will input all the unnecessary beliefs and suggestions that would limits our ability and capabilities in later life. They do it through pure ignorance and they do not mean any harm to you, but these beliefs are the basic stumbling blocks that stops you from achieving greatness in later life. Beliefs such as “you are not good enough”, “you are not worthy”, “you are not smart enough” and so forth. There are thousands of these beliefs stored in your subconscious when you are grown up. These beliefs determine what you achieve or not achieve in your adult life.

This is why most of the so called Powerful Personal Development Tools do not work. Most of these Personal Development Tools do nothing about these embedded limiting beliefs in your subconscious mind. They deal with the tip of the ice berg and not the ice berg itself.

Now you may wonder, what is The Most Powerful Personal Development Technique available to you now?

The Most Powerful Tool is to be present to life at each moment. Not to live in the past or future. When we are thinking about the past or dreaming about the future, we are giving our power away to memories and emotions. Whatever the situation is, you only can act in this moment. You cannot change the past or act in the future. Just act in the moment and it is our true power. When we are not thinking about the past or future or not living in our memories we are above all limiting beliefs that were embedded in our subconscious mind by parents or society. All sages in the world have spoken about the power of the present moment. The moment will give us all the wisdom to settle whatever problem we are having at that moment. But most of us do not hear this message as we are busy living in the past or future. This message comes as a flash and is what we call Intuition.

Even though some gurus say that, being in the moment can be done without any tool, take it from me, it is easy said than done. I have tried to do so, but unless you have about 70,000 hours or so meditation experiences it is near to impossible.

Any tool that will help you to be in the moment without any distractions will be the Most Powerful Personal Development Tool on Earth. So what do you suppose this tool would be?

Scientific research has proved it to be Brainwave Training or Brainwave Entrainment. This is the latest cutting edge technology that lowers your brainwaves to alpha and below, and improves your personal power without any hard work on your part. Why is setting goals a major Human flaw?

April 24th, 2009
mintypeppermint7 asked:

Why are people living life for their future… They don’t look at what is in front of them.

Society tells us that in order to be happy, we have get straight A’s, go to college, get a career, start a family, buy a house, have children, save for retirement….

Society does not tells us what happens when your goals fail…Why is that? Well, because “Life” happens. Life is UNPREDICTABLE. Something happens (unexpectantly) in your life that throws you off course. Correct me if I’m wrong. Who has ever lived life by following a To do list? Literally, followed and planned out a “blueprint” of their life as if the are 100% certain they will HAVE that life? If i’m wrong, tell me YOUR experience…not IDEAS…IDEAS are exactly like Opinions. They are all different. They are not FACTS….I want FACTS and proofs in your life or someone elses. if you agree then you know that living in the NOW (The Present, exact action and moment) is more important and moving than imagining and invisioning.
If you agree, then you know well that Living life (not for the future) but for today, is more moving and realistic than living for the future.

In other words, why do you wake up in the morning?
-Is it because you have to?
- Is it because you are searching for something?
-Is it because you can get to the day you are older?

This is the problem we are facing today…Especially for my generation…for teeanagers like me. Society tells us that the future means passing the SAT/ACT. (Not that it is not important…it is very). Happiness is spending money and possessing material and temporary things.

What happens to us when we don’t meet our goals? Who do we blame? Ourselves?

I think goals are pointless and if you live today fully, and with intensity your life does not need requirements and your living to live; not to exist.

The way Society tells us ho to live is “To EXIST”.
Why am I asking this? I was struck with what I learned this weekend in a Retreat. I want to know if people do believe that setting goals is a flaw and cannot be done according to what you have planned.

I get good grades in school and I love living in the NOW. My friends are in awe of how I live life…with intensity.

I know I may not be perfect and I know I have sinned a lot. But I know and learned that setting goals in life is like fantasizing the perfect future…perfect world…Which is unlikely to happen
Response to JOE T:

I see your point. But the thing is, when you set goals, you misss out in the reason of life.

How can I prove that?
- A scientist is awarded a Nobel Proze in Science for studying and publishing a 1500 page book about flies. Yes…a simple organism. His “Goal” is his life’s work….which is to study a fly. He did that for 6 years.

Now…that is one point of view…
The second.

He has a family… Don’t you think that his life’s work intervened with his family life? He miised out on 6 years of his son’s life. 6 years of love with his wife. 6 years on living life.

Goals are flaws because they distract us from what is in FRONT of us. If people say live life fully to be happy, then is he happy? Did he live life fully? Did he affect anyone around him? Which is more important, his work or family? His goal or family? His goal or life?

Why if something happened to him while doing his life’s work? Why if he dies? Did he not live fully enough?
Response to Jolly,

Aren’t you a sinner too? isn’t everyone a sinner? tell me…have you not sinned?

I have….I probably will in the future. But I still love God. I go to confession. Does that make me perfect? No it doesn’t…

Jesus came to Earth for the SICK and the POOR in spirit. Not for the good people….Why else would He have died?

Why, When and What of Personality Development !

April 24th, 2009

Jacob Curties asked:

1. Why Personality Development?

Understanding oneself and finding what actually he is, is what makes him feel good about himself. In the present generation, the thoughts given to this aspect are very less because the time is best used for the jobs, works and deeds. We tend to be systematic with our lives however in the long run it changes its phase and takes the form of being mechanical. The difference between being systematic and mechanical is, the life is lived to the fullest that makes one feel better in the former whereas in the later, life becomes survival rather than living it.

2. “When does Personality Development come into picture?”

Conceptions:

-          Need to build personality that is convincing to the people around us or for oneself.

-          Need to improve our abilities irrespective of our capabilities.

Personality development is not the outcome, it’s the thought process given to introspect oneself. The above given conceptions are exactly the same as what I termed them. They are just misconceptions. Personality development is not to convince people around us and there is no need to do that. The reason being, everyone is unique and convincing others becomes diluting ones own identity. Personality development never ever improves one’s abilities, but helps one to achieve their capabilities with no compromises. There are other factors that would help to work on our abilities (which are not focused in this article) but not Personality development.

3. “What does Personality Development do to the picture?”

The term “Personality Development” defines what one is. It doesn’t create meaning but defines one. Personality Development has a chain of hidden processes going through a person. The whole picture is to make one happy of what he is and that in turn makes him confident. The confident people are not the most successful but the only successful. Further, the successful people are the most admired because in the process of being successful they gather all the qualities that can influence people around them. So, this is the reason why it’s not an outcome but the process given to introspect oneself.

“Personality Development brings the magnetism to the character of a person.”

Goal Setting Secrets - Measure it

April 18th, 2009

James Robbins asked:

The literature, which supports the effectiveness of proper goal setting, is overwhelming. I must emphasize however the words ‘proper goal setting.’ The small percentage of people who do set goals, do so incorrectly which is why over half of people who make New Year’s Resolutions abandoned them after three months. One of the biggest problems for people in the goal setting process is that they fail to set measurable goals. Take for example the following list of some of the most popular goals set by people.

• Spend more time with family.

• Get in shape

• Have more fun

Proper Goal Setting requires your goals to be measurable.

These are all great ideas but they are not goals. Remember when you went to the family reunion and someone had set up the volleyball net. Slowly more and more people made their way over to the court while you rallied and played around. After a period of time, rallying gets boring an inevitably someone says, “let’s play for real.” Suddenly the game changes. Now you have people getting in their ready stance, positioning becomes important, people start diving for balls and arguing whose ball that was that just landed in between them. What changed to make people behave differently? The ball is the same, the court is the same, even the people are the same. What changed was the fact that now you are measuring. Now as you count points, effort matters. At the end of the game there will be a winner and a loser.

The principle is true for all areas of life. If you really want to change something then you must measure it. Another way to look at this is whatever you measure, you focus on, and what you focus on you change. When you engage in goal setting, you have to set goals that can be measured.

Lets take a look again at the goal ‘Spend more time with family.’ How are we going to measure this? How will we know when we have reached the desired amount of time to deem ’successful’? We need to break this down and ask ourselves, what does this goal look like? I once had a goal setting session where I set a goal resembling ‘Spend more time with family.’ My family helped me out by defining it for me. This is what they said:

• Stay off the computer between 5:00pm and 8:00pm

• Take my wife on a date every other week.

• Once a week have a one-on-one with one of the kids.

Now I had something I could measure. At the end of a few months I could even give you a percentage of how I had done. My family was not looking for perfection here but improvement. If I could show my family that 80% of the time I had done what they had asked, they would certainly determine that to be successful. My family really helped me out that day in my goal setting process.

What about the goal ‘Get in shape’ what does that look like? Last I checked ’round’ was a shape but I don’t think that’s the shape you are talking about. If this is one of your goals you have to break this down into something you can measure. Is it a certain weight you want to reach, inches you want to lose, a cholesterol number you want to get to, a blood pressure reading you want to lower? After you have defined what ‘Shape’ is then you have to set some measurable goals that are going to get you there. They might be things like exercise for 45 minutes three times a week, or stick to my meal plan everyday, or cut out all junk food. Make sure you goal setting is as practical as possible.

Now let’s take a look at the last goal to ‘Have more fun.’ Again, how will you know when you have reached this? Last time I checked there was no such thing as a Fun-Meter, which you could hook yourself up to and get a reading. First of all what activities are fun for you? Once you determine that then do some goal setting to motivate you to do those activities more often. Lets say hanging out with friends is what really gets you jazzed, then set some goals for times with friends every month. You might want to set aside two Saturdays each month for entertaining guests and designate one weeknight as movie night where you go and check out the latest movies. Goal setting in the areas of things like time with friends may seem a bit weird, but if it helps you build some new habits, it is worth it.

The secret is to make your goals measurable otherwise they are not really goals at all but rather good intentions. But if you take the time to find a way to measure your goals and create the supporting steps to help get you there, in no time at all you will experience incredible success in your life. Remember that your goal setting must be measurable.

Need direction. where to start with writing?

April 18th, 2009
hp_resource asked:

I’ve been on Y!Answers for a long time, so I know there are 1001 questions about “How do I become a writer!?” but that’s not the kind of general question I’m asking.

I’m looking for a specific answer about where I should start, or what kind of goal I should set for myself. Writing has been strictly a hobby for me - a few short stories posted online, a kid’s book for my niece, some snippets of a novel that seems like such an overwhelmingly huge project that I could never finish it…

My problem is, I feel unstructured, and I have a lifetime goal to publish a book. I feel like I haven’t taken enough classes to have a serious goal when it comes to my writing. I feel unqualified to write a novel, despite my desire to.

I know I’ll never finish unless I feel like I can be successful. Should I 1) focus time on writing and setting goals and just finishing the novel, despite my inexperience or 2) invest my time in structured classes and workshops, with my novel as “side project” with “writing” in general as my goal?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice! :)

The Three Steps to Developing an Effective Personal Development Plan

April 15th, 2009
Comments Off
Ron Subs asked:

Effective personal development is the key to finding true self-reliance and control. From communicating with others at work, dealing with situations at home, and even mastering money, personal development is the greatest way to achieve satisfaction in your life. Regardless of your specific goal, whether it be seeking higher education or simply how to better mange your expenses for a brighter future, your personal development plan will help you discover exactly who you are in life and what you want out of your life. Discovering one’s true self and learning how to use your natural talents and personal drives to accomplish your goal is a key component of any personal development plan.

The first step to personal development is accountability. You must first be held responsible for all your actions or inactions. You must step up and finally admit what it is that is holding you back from developing into the person you want to become. For those seeking better money management, admit your splurges, learn how to control or if possible, eliminate some of them altogether, and then you can accomplish a greater sense of satisfaction at the end of the month, instead of spending time on the phone, making arrangements with creditors because you’ve overspent your budget. Accountability is one of the toughest steps to an effective personal development plan. It requires that you be very honest with who you are and what you have been over the past years. It may be hard to thoroughly examine yourself in the necessary way, but once you have decided on your course of action, you will find it easier to address your situation and make the needed changes.

The second step to effective personal development is establishing a list of goals. You must figure out exactly where you want to be in life and when exactly do you plan to have it accomplished. The goal setting is the easiest part of personal development. It helps define what you want, where you will get it from, and when you plan to have it. You will already have found that you have created an introductory set of goals when you first started on your personal development strategy. Here is where you will go over your personal goals, eliminate the ones that will not help you meet your end goal, and keep the ones that will help you discover true personal satisfaction. After you have your goals, figure out which ones are short-term goals, or one to five year goals, and which are long term, five to ten year goals. This will aid in the creation of the specific patterns and habits you will have to alter to meet your goals.

The third step to personal development is choosing your course of action. This is the part where you actually strive to obtain your goals. This is the most difficult part of personal development. To satisfy your short-term goals, develop personal habits. For a financial goal, develop a savings pattern. For other goals, like perhaps trying to curse less or attend church more, develop habits that will aid in this goal. Develop a reward and punishment system for each goal. For long term goals, the approach is similar. Develop personal habits and patterns that will aid in the satisfaction of these goals as well. Most importantly, though, be patient and understand success will not come overnight and it will take time, practice, and dedication before you find yourself exactly where you plan to be.

Although personal development is one of the most sought after development plans, it is very stressful. Lifestyles and personal habits will need to be changed or eliminated. However in the end, you will find the greatest satisfaction in knowing you yourself, have accomplished exactly what you set out to do. That is a tremendous feeling and one well worth the effort.

Why Personal Development is Important to Your Home Based Business

April 13th, 2009
Comments Off
Jennifer Patton asked:

Personal Development. When you start a home based business personal development becomes very important but sometimes that importance is not realized until several months have gone by. You may spend those first few months focusing only on learning the business, product and compensation plan. Or you could believe that by attending company conference calls and business presentations that you are gaining personal development. Most of the time this is not the case.

Most successful entrepreneurs will say to work more on yourself than you do your business. What does this mean? There are several ways to gain personal development. Books, DVDs, Cd’s, online courses, and seminars are just a few that you can use for your home based business. A new exercise program, dietary research, and personal hygiene can be used for physical personal development. You may go even further and decide to work on your spiritual development and can do that be attending your personal religions’ church or temple, reading spiritual books, and learning how to have a relationship with your God.

Let’s take a closer look at using your personal development for your home based business. You may want to sit down and write down your weaknesses pertaining to you business as well as your strengths and then systematically start creating situations where you are making both stronger. Weaknesses are important to improve upon, but strengths are going to carry you so improving your strengths is just as important.

Pick some mentors to mold yourself after. Each business that you are in will have several mentors available to you whether they are in your business or in your industry. Surrounding yourself with these leaders will make you become stronger, more confident, and focused in your business. Your most important mentors can be people that you have never even met. They are leaders whose material you follow and learn to create greatness within yourself. Call the leaders within your organization- interview them, take them to lunch if possible, and ask them how they got where they are at. I guarantee it was through personal development coupled with a determination and desire to succeed.

Set goals for yourself on a daily basis. Personal development should be twenty percent of your daily activities. So if you are working a five hour day in your home based business four hours should be spent on your business and one hour spent on your personal development. Decide what you are going to be doing and stick to it. Start small and work up to where you want to be. You definitely do not want to overwhelm yourself with too much information. Realize that everything that you read, see and hear may not be for you but take the key components that are and apply them to your home business and your life.

Make sure that the business that you choose has a way set up for you to gain personal development from within the business. Many businesses offer webinars or calls with industry personal development coaches, have recommendation site for reading, or provide referrals for seminars to attend. Having a business that promotes personal development as well as the business is key to your success.
